Popcorn and a Movie Party!

My two oldest sons celebrate their birthdays in the winter. This year, we already had an inflatable-bouncy-house-overpriced-generic-party planned on the East Coast when back visiting family. I wanted to keep their New Mexico house parties small and significantly more unique. This gave me the perfect chance to go all out while keeping it to a budget! I managed to keep them away from a licensed character as the East Coast party was Angry Birds themed. I sold them on a movie night with friends at our house with popcorn and a concession stand. This was by far the most fun I have had yet styling a party! Be forewarned, there are many pictures coming.

I looked into renting a projector for a huge wall we have in our living room for the movie showing but was fortunate enough to have found one to borrow from a friend- $$$ savings!! I was also intent on having a popcorn machine, preferably an old fashioned style one. After looking around, it was very apparent (as I was going to do this party for each boy) that purchasing one was a much better investment than renting. Each rental would have been about $70 for four hours and we were able to snag a $65 table top machine with free shipping off of Kohls! Holla!!! I have since seen them at Target and Marshalls. I LOVE this machine!

I snagged most of the great paper products from Hobby Lobby (can you say LOVE-the East Coast needs one of these). I was even able to find a great 2 piece invitation there; usually I have them printed but these were so well done. Again, more $ savings!

I did however splurge on drink containers. My son LOVES Sprite and despite my constant efforts to prevent him from soda – ever – he gets clear soda on occasion and cherishes it. I told him we could serve Sprite at his party since it was his special day. I looked everywhere for glass Sprite bottles but it cost as much to ship them as it cost to buy them ($35 for Sprite and $35 to ship – SAY WHAT!). So instead, I went with a recyclable option- glass bottles (again, I was doing this party twice so it was worth a bit extra). I have secretly loved these bottles having seen them on the fancy party blogs and stared adoringly at them. SO worth the $4 each (shhh, don’t tell hubby). Ta-dah!

The concession stand was simple to put together and I used glass containers I had around the house, wire ribbon, and the awesome Flourish paper punch for the labels (this is a must have paper punch!).

The detail most fun to create however, and what the boys loved the most, were the cupcakes! Using mini marshmallows and Wilton color spray, the kernels actually looked real! The cupcake wrappers are from Paper Party Creations. The responses from my family and guests were amazing!

We created an old time photo booth with props as part of the pre-movie entertainment. The kiddos had a blast!

The movie that we showed was the new Smurfs movie! I found awesome $1 coloring books at Michaels and printed out individual tickets.

It’s Showtime!

It was an unforgettable night…or so the boys said :)

  5. Loved looking at your movie party post! We’re having one for my daughter, but after doing the red carpet (the girls are dressing up!) and concessions at home, we’re headed to the premiere of Brave.

Just FYI for others looking into this theme, I just bought a popcorn machine off Overstock.com for $26.05 with free s/h (if they aren’t offering this option at any given time, just Google a coupon code for it!).

Great ideas! I LOVE a themed party for my kids…especially when it’s not a character!

    • Great find on the machine! I often see them at Marshalls too. Such a better investment than renting one; now you can use it for a family night too! We can’t wait to see Brave. I love the Red Carpet idea! Thanks for stopping by and make sure to follow along for future fun!
